Peranakan Baba Nyonya Food Tasting Campaign

Part 1: PERANAKAN BABA NYONYA FOOD TASTING CAMPAIGN
About
Peranakan is a term used for the descendants of late 15th and 16th-century Chinese immigrants to the Nusantara region during the colonial era. “Peranakan”, “Baba–Nyonya” and “Straits Chinese” (named so after the Straits of Malacca) are
terms used for the descendants of the early Chinese immigrants to the region including to the British Straits Settlements of Penang, Malacca, and Singapore, and the Dutch–controlled island of Java who partially adopted Malay customs to be assimilated into the local communities. Peranakan food culture has been overlooked by other communities. I would like to promote the food culture of Peranakan Baba Nyonya because humankind’s identity is symbolized by our food choices. Whereby, I am proposing a mock Food Tasting Event for my Final Year project. This Event will highlight the food tradition
of Baba Nyonya to educate and make our target audience taste and get to learn about the best-tasting distinctive ingredients, techniques, and dishes which are associated with the Peranakan by reflecting on and discussing the different foods they tried through stations of different foods. Nyonya cuisine is widely spread in the Malay Archipelago which is known as a fusion of Chinese immigrant and local Malay cuisine. The cuisine has been established and developed with globalization and the movement of the people in the region. It is identified as a cultural product or image of society which represents the identity of the people in society.
